Buds Story

Let me share a little bit with you about my brother besides just the name Roy Bud Melton, dogfighting,drugs, and a murder victim. My brother Bud was a kind person that was grounded and was happy with the smaller things in life. He did not flash, live beyond his means, or take anything that didn’t belong to him. I want to specify that my brother would have never killed another human being unless it was in self- defense because someone was trying to kill him. He would have never planned a murder nor would he ever play a part in going to someone’s home and killing them. My brother was killed by someone that he thought was a friend and that he could trust.

Roy “Bud” Thomas Melton was born December 13, 1968 and our childhood was not the best to say the least. However he done the best that he could do considering the circumstances. He grew up without a mother or a father in foster care and was a felon at a young age. He tried to maintain a job and did for quite sometime as a painter. When the company he worked for went down he was left without a job and it was very hard for him to then find another place of employment. In 1994 i bought my brother his first pitbull, and he loved it very much. After a while he recieved another pitbull where he then began to breed  and sell them as a source of income. In those days he did not believe in the act of fighting dogs. Everyday he would walk his dogs through the neighborhood and many people would stop and tell him how beautiful his dogs were and in the same breath ask him if he wanted to “roll” (fight) them. For a long time he would tell the people that asked him to fight his dogs to “go to hell.” I can see now where people have a hard time believing that but that is totally up to you whether you choose to believe that or not.

The more he found out about the pitbull breed and the more that he got involved with other pitbull breeders, things changed. Bud began to then get involved with the underground world of dogfighting. I have said since day one that what was going on wasn’t right. However my brother was his own person, his own man, and there was nothing that i could have done to change that. Back in those days people did not lock into fights with people that they did not know.

Bud had then gotten to the point to where he was forced to move out of the city limits and into a more rural area because he could not have all of his dogs in the city limits. He lived in the surrounding areas for a total of 9 years however he lived at 3375 Mt.Beulah Rd. Sherrills Ford, NC 28673 for 6 years. All of Bud’s friends knew that you needed to call him before coming to his home and that you just did not bring anyone to his house. This really says that my brother led a very low- profile life to be in the same place for 6 years and law enforcement not have a clue about what was going on.(but that is a whole different conversation on another page)

With everything being said April 17, 2007 sometime in the early morning there was obviously a prior conversation for someone to come to his home and him go to the door without protection. April 17, 2007 when the 5:00 news came on and I seen my brothers home go across the news with the title 30 pit bulls found at mans house that has been shot to death is when the spiral stairway to hell began for me.

  The true friends that my brother had in his life were in his life for years. Also his true friends that come to share his life at his funeral come just for him and not the dogfighting besides one specific person(this person knows exactly who they are). With that being said they brought 5 other couples that myself (Bud’s sister) or anyone else that was at the funeral had never even seen before. Like I said as me being his only family I personally was not even introduced to these people that showed up at the funeral. Nobody else that was Bud’s lifetime friends knew these people either or was even introduced to them.

By the way if you watch the video about the murder scene and the interview you will notice that I Maria Melton said that I was not aware of my brothers dogfighting situation. In that moment in time on April 18, 2007 I was NOT about to go on national television and bash my brother about him being involved in dogfighting. At that time I was more concerned about my brothers murder rather than speaking about his involvement in dogfighting.
